I wish I were spending the day cooking in a cozy American kitchen, drinking beer and wine, watching the parade and football. Instead, I'm working and so far my students have not made me particularly thankful to have them. This is always a bittersweet day for me. I try to be upbeat and thankful but frequently find myself lapsing into melancholy. Oh well.

Happy Thanksgiving! The kids were talking about feasting yesterday, but we don't have any special meal plans. The restaurant down the street has turkey legs, but we don't see it on the menu much, despite it being indigenous here. I did see an ad in the subway car yesterday for turkey ham, though. And I just learned it's called guajalote here as well as pavo, so maybe it's more prevalent than we're aware.
We'll be thinking about you, Tanya. We made stuffing, cranberry sauce and pecan pie last night.
I'm in Colorado hanging out with a friend until early Dec when I'm off for a few days in Australia. We have nothing special planned today -- both using it as another day to catch up on stuff. We did go to Bohemian Rhapsody yesterday afternoon. Tickets were only $6! Hadn't seen that price for a movie in decades.

What is the best way to arrange carbon offsets?
I went with a friend from work to her family's Thanksgiving. She wanted someone to take a bunch of family grouping photos. They mostly turned out well. It was fun.
I get carbon offsets through www.cooleffect.org You buy by the tonne - it's roughly $10 a tonne (2205 lbs) depending on the project. 1 tonne should cover any domestic round trip flight - or to Canada/Mexico. Going to Australia - 2 or 3 tonnes I'd say. It's quite easy, and there's a good selection of projects that help people in addition to reducing carbon pollution.
Wrote a longish comment on my phone yesterday which dissolved into the ether when I hit "post"...thinking of you, too, Tanya and hoping your students start earning your well-deserved gratitude! We are having a couple of longed-for rainy days here so we are finding some things to be happy about.

The first version of my post about seeing the volcanoes from the plane was eaten because my Blogger app doesn't support saving drafts offline. Unbelievable! So, from that point on I drafted all my posts in Google Docs, and pasted them into the app for posting. I wouldn't have thought to do the same with comments, though.
