Things are growing at the farm and it's time to get the goats out of the greenhouse.
We took them out for an hour or so. The main thing we learned was a little about how to get them to go where you want. We had them on leashes, but the two twins (Callie and Poppy) were on a double lead I had rigged up with a rope, and it wasn't the best. But with three goats and two people, what else can you do? Actually, I'm hopeful that if we have Dahlia on a lead that the two younger ones will pretty much follow along and maybe we won't have to have leads for them at all.
The main thing the goats learned was to stay away from the electric fence. Here's Pam the goat herder.
Dahlia is the large one closest to Pam. Callie is in back - she has a white patch on her forehead. Poppy is between - she has a white patch on her left side.

After a few days of leading them out and back, which always involves delays while they eat something, tangled leashes, and a fair bit of tugging, we noticed that in the evening they seemed to know where their pen was and want to go there, so a couple of days ago we tried turning them loose and seeing if we could get them home without the leads. It was easier than expected, and both we and the goats enjoyed the process more. They kick up their heels and run with the kind of crazy jumps and kicks that you might associate with goats. It helped that I primed their pen with some treats in the feed dish, which they quickly found. Today we tried a similar thing taking them out to the field, and it worked just as well. I had a bucket with some hay and snacks in it, and they just followed me all the way out to the fenced area with no problem. My conclusion - this was more about training us, than training the goats!
