I just got back from a meeting of the American Fisheries Society in Lake Placid, NY. LP is in the northern Adirondack mountains, and reminded me a lot of Juneau on a nice sunny day. That is, until Wednesday, when it rained all day in LP, and reminded me of Juneau on a rainy day. Anyway, it is a pretty area, with quite a few lakes and tree covered "mountains". We had part of our convention in the ice hockey rink where the USA beat the Soviets in 1980. We had another event out at the ski jumps -- which are REALLY impressively scary looking from the bottom. They had some kind of astroturf stuff on the runouts (very steep) and some jumpers were actually practicing in the rain.

You know they had a skiing class for physical education at Texas A&M. They covered it in some synthetic material that behaves like snow. I think it was called Mount Aggie. The only problem was that Texans don't know how to ski, so too many of them were getting hurt. So, I don't think they do it anymore, but I'm not sure.
