Was Santa a month (and a day) late? What is going on?
After dinner I retired to the guest bedroom / yoga / office space at the northwest corner of the house.
Soon I thought I heard a faint squeaking sound - I couldn't place it inside or outside - or even be certain of what I'd heard. Perhaps it was something with the trumpet that I was holding at the time. I wiggled the valves and pulled at one of the slides, but nothing like a squeak, or a whistle. Then I thought I heard it again, but not quite the same.
I went into the bathroom and turned on the light, then heard the sound again, definite, and sounding like it was outside. I returned to the main room, which has a door on the north side, unlocked and opened it. (In the movies, this is what you do right before you die...)
With the door open, I heard the clatter of hooves, many of them, along with the whistle/squeak calls. Reindeer? Donner? Blitzen?
But there was no sleigh on the roof, and no Jolly Old Elf.
Just a herd of elk running past.

Cool! And glad you lived to tell the tale.
A herd of elk! Maybe they want to make friends with the goats.
