News about Rachel

Rachel scored her first basket of the season on Saturday, in her team's penultimate regular season basketball game. Unfortunately, the rest of the team only managed eight points, and they lost, 19-10. The good news is that it was only their second loss of the season, after we managed to eke out wins in the two games I substitute coached, and they're probably headed for the playoffs.

This Saturday afternoon, after her final basketball game, she's been invited to participate in the All-City Elementary Instrumental Music Honors Concert, on the trumpet. It's a three-hour event, with a concert at the end. Before that, presumably they'll learn some new music and practice it together. We'll let you know how it goes.

Yesterday morning, Rachel went to the middle school to meet with a Spanish teacher for a placement exam. I guess it went well, because the teacher asked to have her put on the wait list for the immersion-level class. Rachel told me the teacher told her it would be challenging for her, but we (and she, I think) will be much happier with a challenge she's up for than an introductory-level class.

All fifth graders are required to participate in the Coe science fair at the end of April. Rachel was thinking about topics this week, and so far seems to have settled on experimenting with the effect of butter temperature on chocolate chip cookies. We'll let you know how that goes, too.
