The blog has been alive for over a month now. In spite of a general trend promoting carrying of digital cameras and commemoration of events, I feel like I haven't had that much to say. Well, that's all about to change. At least for a moment.
The trouble is, it really does seem to be the case that I haven't been up to all that much. Early to bed, early to rise, and often at the office, has been my mode lately. Among other things, I have been preparing for the course that I will begin teaching two weeks from today. However, it is not the case that I have done nothing all this time. For example:
Saturday, Nicole and I went with our friend Paola to the Baltimore Book Festival in the monument district, also known as Mount Vernon, of downtown Baltimore. Then, as you have already seen, Sunday we went to the real Mount Vernon. The book festival was interesting, but we didn't stay very long. It feels strange to me browsing books when there are eager people on the other side of the counter looking at me expectantly. So I didn't, much. I also declined to write a poem and hang it from a tree. Maybe I would have had more fun if I had participated. After leaving the festival, we drove around to Federal Hill and Fort McHenry, neither of which Paola had ever visited, despite living in Baltimore for the last four years.
I would also like to relate a small anecdote of my own amusement. If there was a theme to our weekend, it would have to be George Washington. That man is everywhere. On our way to the real Mount Vernon yesterday, we took the parkway that bears his name for a long stretch. Along the way a highway sign points to the George Bush Center for Intelligence. Now, I know that the father of our current president served as director of the CIA for almost a year, but the collocation still made me smile.
Let this be a lesson to you. Don't let those little moments pass us by while you await the great American column-length short story. Blog now!

Your mentionning the book festival made me think that you guys are in an area where Joyce Carol Oates will probably be appearing at one time or another. If you ever hear she's doing a book signing or something, can you get me an autograph?
Congrats on your class! Hope it goes well. I'd sign up, but I have no idea what you're talking about. My first class is starting Thursday night, but that's not quite the same.
Oh.... I think JCO may have appeared last weekend at the mall -- or maybe she was on the metro yesterday....
... or, maybe that was Elvis.

Ah, the elusive mt comment. As opposed to this, which could be described as an empty comment. I'm glad I decided to browse for unanswered questions, or I never would have found it.
