If you stop by the Cercle one of these late September days, you may hear the strange tale of the phantom trumpeter. Around the twelfth of September, people started hearing an unusual noise drifting through the village in the late afternoons. It was a sound they'd never heard before in these parts. It sounded as if it were coming from some sort of horn. Sometimes it was melodious. At other times, it was more like squawking. It could be heard for a couple of hours every day. Then it would vanish as quickly as it had begun. Men heard it on their way to and from the Cercle. Children playing in the playground of the schoolyard heard it. Families heard it as they relaxed on their patios in the late afternoon sun. But what was this strange noise and where exactly was it coming from? Some say it must be the ghost of a long lost shepherd herding his sheep down from the mountains for the winter. Others speculate that the priest might be experimenting with new sounds for the church bell. The sound has not been heard since the early evening of the seventeenth. The phantom trumpeter seems to have vanished, leaving the villagers perplexed and with many unaswered questions.

Careful.... we don't want quiet Lascours to turn into the next major pilgrimage site. Better if people just believe the squawking was a hoarse rooster....
Hee-hee. I believe there were some similar rumors in Oakland not too long ago...
