I had to go up to Lyon yesterday afternoon to sign my employment contract. If I had waited until the first day of class, I would have had to go a month without pay. I decided the sixty some-odd euros and eight hours of time the trek cost me were worth being paid in September. Doing the actual paperwork only took me five minutes max (all she needed was my signature, seemed a bit silly, really), but I had three hours in Lyon. I did a bit of shopping, started thinking about Christmas gifts, bought myself some new lingerie, found a birthday gift for Gabrielle, mailed Lucas' birthday card, did a bit of reading, edited a colleague's article, and had coffee and a donut at the new Starbucks in the Lyon train station. The weather was warm and sunny. All in all, not an unpleasant afternoon. Classes start on the 16th.

You definitely win the mega commuter award. Here in the states we have this technology called fax machines, and you could sign your form and "fax it" - it's kind of like magic -- you put it in a machine and it comes out hundreds of miles -- er, I mean kilometers -- away. Some pioneers are even using something called a "scanner" and "pdf" files that you can email -- which is another kind of magic that is sometimes confused with a canned meat-like substance... but I digress. The avant garde (oh, that's a French term isn't it?) uses a higher form of magic -- practically sorcery -- called "electronic signature". I've never actually seen an electron's signature (that's why it's magic) but my guess is it is pretty small. But I guess train + time is a decent Old World substitute for magic!

Yes, Dad. I haven't completely forgotten my pragmatic American heritage. That's why I qualified the experience as "silly." The French do love their hard-copy papers and files.
We use electronic signatures at work.
Maybe you should all write to the university administration on my behalf. Just in case for next year.
