Monday, we picked up fishing licenses after visiting Grandpa Earl and Reed's Dairy. So, Tuesday through Thursday, we went fishing.
Tuesday, the weather remained rainy and the creek we were going to fish in was muddy, so we backtracked to Alpine, Wyoming for lunch before fishing along the Snake River below the Palisades Dam. We didn't catch anything.
Wednesday we went north to Birch Creek, which had recently been stocked with rainbow trout. Very recently, because we saw two people from Fish & Game ferrying trout from a tank on their truck to the creek. I didn't catch anything, but I found an extra lure in a tree. Most everyone else did, and we came home with nine rainbows after a long day of standing in the creek.
Thursday morning we got going a bit later, but eventually found our way to the nearby Snake River near Heise. We didn't fish there long, though, because I fell off a rock that tipped under me and stubbed my big toe badly. I don't think it's broken, but it hurt a lot. We cut short fishing and went into Idaho Falls for books and ice cream. Colin finished both the books he brought, so we got him more for the rest of the trip and the drive home.
We got a few other books, too, including Roadside Geology of Idaho, and Nicole encouraged me to read from it on the way home. I found a note about the Menan Buttes, which we had passed on Wednesday, and was about to start in when Rachel asked for music instead. One thing led to another, and the result was me trying to read geology as a rap with a backbeat provided by Rachel. This was a nice moment of levity, in contrast to what came next.
I won't provide details, but instead of brushing and riding horses, Nicole helped her parents treat an injured horse while they waited for the emergency vet. It took more than thirty minutes for him to arrive from Rigby. Fortunately, the mare seems OK, now. Meanwhile, I was tasked with looking after dinner on the grill, not knowing when we'd be ready to eat. Dinner was later than intended, but it turned out OK.
