AK/WA Adventure: Day 3

Thursday, July 31st. 

We awoke about the same time. Sylvain left about 6am for a 10k run. He saw quite a few deer. Before leaving, he asked me if there were bears around and I said no. When he returned, he learned from Dana that there are black bears, though they've never seen any. They have, however, seen cougars and there have been cougars run-ins in the area.

We had a leisurely morning. Cece made a delicious breakfast of English muffins, veggie crustless quiches and fruit salad. The girls played a few rounds of cornhole. Then we went for another walk on the beach. We spotted a few porpoise and an eagle. More rocks were skipped. It was easier as the water was flatter than Wednesday. Sylvain got a few series of about 10! The girls went wading and we all ate blackberries. The girls got up on a huge log and rode it like a sort of teeter totter.

Over lunch of tortellini salad, Dana noticed an eagle swimming towards shore right out in front of their place. It had quite a way to go and we were afraid it might not make it as it slowed down a bit over time. The girls went outside to try to see the shore better. She heard it arrive on shore, then shortly after, saw it take off. We all breathed a sigh of relief. 

After lunch, we drove 45 minutes north to Port Townsend, a cute little coastal town. We walked around, looked at the shops and late 19th century building, and saw a gray whale skeleton replica on a pier, about 50 feet long. Then we got Elevated ice cream and found some outdoor seating at a winery which had a band playing. My Swiss orange chocolate chip was delicious. And the red wine blend Sylvain and I had was quite good, too. We also all shared some cheese and crackers.

We left a tiny bit on the plate when we bussed our table, which probably made a seagull happy. They were coming in to steal snacks from the bus bin occasionally. Maëva walked down to the ferry terminal with Dana to get some information and they saw a harbor seal. Driving out of town, we saw a lot of deer and even had to stop for a doe and two fawns crossing the street.

Our next stop was the Finn River Cidery. The Lavender Blackcurrant cider was as tasty as Dana and Cece had promised. I had two! We also had some snacks and listened to the second half of marine science trivia.

Back home, Dana grilled up some sausages for those who hadn't already eaten enough. I spotted another porpoise. Maëva headed to bed and the rest of us stayed up until 11 learning how to play Azul. Then we zonked out after a second full day of Olympic Peninsula adventures.
