AK/WA Adventure: Day 7

Monday, August 4th 

Maëva and I were up around 6, far before the others. We sat in the broom closet for a bit where our light and movements wouldn't bother anyone else.

We were all ready and packed up about 9. We stopped at Breeze In for donuts, drove by the Meadow Lane house, then went out to the glacier.

We ate our donuts in the parking lot and looked at the salmon in Steep Creek. We met up with the rest of the family and eventually decided to hang around for a bit. We went up to the Visitor's Center and the girls picked out some postcards in the gift shop. Then Sylvain asked about walking out to Nugget Falls, so a bunch of us did that.

I hadn't been out there before. When we were kids, the ice came all the way out to it. Now, you can barely spot any glacier ice from the base of the Falls.

Next, we all met up at downtown Bullwinkles for lunch. To our delight, it tasted the same as we remembered, though they've no longer serve popcorn with it.

Sylvain ordered anchovies and they gave him a tin so he could garnish his own. He said they were very good.

After lunch, we went to Devil's Club Brewery on North Franklin while the kids went shopping for souvenirs then met up with Mom and Rick for ice cream. We all agreed the wild ale was a disgusting scam and should have been labeled as an oak sour. I think the signature IPA was generally enjoyed. 

Next stop was the Amalga Distillery just a few doors up the hill. Unfortunately, there was no rhubarb gin in stock, only the Juneauper Gin. Sylvain and I chose two cocktails to share, one with basil and one with ginger beer. Both were tasty and refreshing, though we preferred the ginger one. I had a sip of Julie's grapefruit cocktail, which had a strong fruit taste and was also quite good. The kids needed something to do, so we came up with a challenge that they all wholeheartedly embraced: Spell out Tromble on the map of downtown Juneau by walking and tracking the route with Andrew's Garmin watch. It took them over an hour, but they successfully completed the challenge, leaving the adults more time to chat in peace. A lady sat down next to me with a dog. It lay down under the table and put its head on my foot for a pillow.

We all left at 5:30 and parted ways. We drove out North Douglas to James and Jennifer's. They had a delicious meal of slow-cooked ribs, sockeye salmon filet, Dungeness crab and salad waiting for us. To drink, there was Forbidden Peak beer. I had Red Spruce Ale, which I thought was tastier than the Haines one from Sunday. Sylvain had the IPA.
