Tuesday, August 5th
We awoke to rain and changed hiking plans with Angie from a morning start on West Glacier to a 2pm start on the East Glacier Loop. I woke up with the head cold Sylvain had been battling since Hood Canal.
James made us breakfast of fluffy, buttery waffles. Then we met Roy's and Evan's crew at DIPAC at 10:45. The fish were packed into the ladder and it was fun to watch their movements. There were also a couple seals at the buffet. We went to the rearing room and all overestimated the number of fry: only 300,000 per pool times four pools. We touched the sea cucumbers, anemones and starfish in the touch tanks and watched the fish and crabs in the aquarium. Sylvain bought Laureva a salmon stuffy. She gave it the onomatopoeic name Bop for the sound they make with their mouths.
At noon, we went to Angie's house for lunch. She, Nate and Riley were there. Nate made us grilled cheese. The house is on Fritz Cove and they have a lovely view of Auke Bay. After lunch, the girls went out to pick blueberries with Riley.
Nate had to go back to work. The rest of us and Angie's two dogs got ready to meet Evan, Andrew and Lucas to begin the hike, after the minor setback of Maëva's hiking boots. When she put them back on at Angie's, one of the souls fell completely off. She had to borrow a pair of Cora's larger sneakers and an extra pair of socks in order to do the hike. The large shoes didn't slow her down much.
Roy's group was still eating with Mom at the Auke Bay Café when we arrived at the trailhead, so they arrived later and eventually caught up with us.
Between dinner and dessert, the kids played on the trampoline while James, Sylvain and I went for a walk along the highway out by the boat launch. The sunset was lovely.
