Today was finally the first day of school for Lydia. We had a half-hour meeting with her teacher on Friday. Ms. Gardner seems like just the caring and exuberant teacher you would hope for in kindergarten.
I woke Lydia up this morning about 6:30, and she was immediately ready to start her day, picking out her clothes, getting dressed, and coming downstairs to eat left-over banana and Nutella crêpes. After more photos and Schultüte opening (Lydia's gift was a mystery ticket for an event coming up on September 25), the whole family once again ventured out into the chilly sunshine, around 7:40, this time carrying a large supply of grapes.
The five-minute-warning bell rang just as we arrived at the school. Nicole took Lydia to her classroom (with Eric attached) while Colin and I accompanied Rachel to go meet her teacher, Mrs. McDonald. Colin and I left directly to head to pre-school, but Nicole stayed after drop-off for the Boo-Hoo Breakfast.
After school, Rachel met Lydia outside her classroom and walked home with her. Nicole went to make sure that the meeting happened as planned, and took photos of the girls walking home together. She was filled with happiness.
We haven't convinced Lydia to share many details of the day yet, but Rachel determined that she did play with her friend Blake at recess.
This evening we had another cafeteria-style dinner with guests. This time the menu included chili over cornbread waffles, steamed green beans and heirloom carrots, and grape cake and sherbet. The guests included Karen and Noah, Ruth and Matt and Lydia's friend Brian, and our college friend Chris and his girlfriend Megan. With just one extra child, it was much less rowdy than last week. After the other guests had departed, Rachel had a long conversation with Chris about Pokémon Go.

Can't wait to hear more about the mystery event!
Read Tanya's post first. What is it with all the grapes? I can report a baggie of grapes accompanied me to Anchorage, sat in the fridge during the 4-days of class, then accompanied me back home uneaten at the end of day 5.
We went to Ruth and Matt's house on Saturday afternoon to pick grapes. They have an extensive vine inhabiting their back fence/arbor, and unlike Tanya, they had a banner crop this year. We filled a laundry basket with an estimated fifteen pounds of grapes. We gave most of them away to various teachers yesterday, and used others for desserts, but we have one bowl left.
If you keep carrying them around, maybe eventually you'll have raisins.
I love how Lydia's name starts small and ends HUGE!
Congratulations everyone on a smashing first day of school!
