Goodbye, Gill

Maëva's godfather, Gill, passed away during the night from a heart attack. Now we are faced for the first time with the heartwrenching task of explaining to the girls that they have lost someone they love. Gill was a generous, fun-loving man who loved both girls immensely. The girls both adored him and looked forward to his weekly Monday evening visits. His absence will be deeply felt.

Well, that really sucks.

I'm so sorry to hear that. I'm sure you will do a great job explaining, but there will probably be questions off and on for a while, and popping up out of the blue.

Very sorry to hear this. My thoughts are with all of you. No doubt the girls may find it hard to understand. They may also serve as sources of unexpected memories as time goes on.

Maëva is having a hard time understanding how it happened and why. She doesn't understand why a doctor wasn't able to help him. The first thing she said when I told her was, "So he won't be able to bring me chocolate anymore?" Gill has kept the girls stocked with a steady supply of Kinder chocolate for quite awhile now. I assured her we would keep up the tradition as a way of remembering him. She didn't seem particularly upset last night, but she couldn't fall asleep and eventually ended up coming in to sleep with me. This morning, she asked me why I had felt it necessary to share the sad news with her. She said she didn't want to know that sad news. I sent her to school this morning with a note for her teacher so she'd understand if Maëva displayed any unusual behavior.

Coming late to this sad news and admiring your insight as a parent. That's a wonderful picture that gives a sense of Gill's relationship to the girls, a great way to be remembered.
