I've noticed a recent post title punctuation termination trend, so I thought I would play along.
Today is the first day of classes at Hopkins. That means I've officially begun my fourth year as a Ph.D. student. Where has the time gone? It also means my three-year fellowship has sailed. I'm no longer funded by the DoD and ARO. I've jumped to a research assistanceship indirectly funded by NSF. Maybe someday I'll get to go on an internship, too.

The beginning of your fourth year of how many????
On the questions trend, I'm going to raise a question of the week ... how many stairs do I do on my walk up the staircase from the 2nd floor to the 12th floor of the Sarkeys Energy Center? I'll give you a couple hints ... there are 21 stairs between the 11th and 12th floors and all the floors are there ... so going from 2-12 involves 10 "flights" of stairs. The closest to the correct amount gets a prize ... to be determined at a later date. Only one submission per blog account. No adding blog accounts, Roy! : - )
I decided to start taking the stairs because I don't particularly like riding elevators, and the elevator will, invariably, stop at least 5 times on the way up ... which is even more of a pain than just a smooth ride. Why are people so lazy?

It's my fourth year out of n, where n is a variable whose value is as yet unknown.
Mom might know more about buildings than I do. Since the only information you gave us is that there are 10 floors and one of them has 21 steps, I'm going to assume that example is representative and conclude that there are 210 steps altogether.
The question is, will the following inequality be true:
n - 2 >= p, where p is the number of years I will take. If so, you know what that means, right?
Wait a minute. You need to add me into that equation too!

Ok, new equation/inequality:
n >= p + t,
where n, p, and t are the number of years Roy, Evan, and Tanya will take to finish grad school.
