This from one of my good students. A very sweet, polite girl who always came prepared to class. But this is anonymous, so no harm done: In the 1980s, the Canadian PM "took a raft of sanctions against South Africa in the fields of economy and politic." A "raft" of sanctions? Interesting. I don't think that's what she meant. But I wonder if it could be a metaphor worth exploring . . .

Merriam-webster.com gives this as the 3rd definition of raft: (noun) a large collection or number.
Hmmm . . . could my student have known that? Even so, the text gives no indication of the number of sanctions imposed.
