On Friday, December 20, we ventured to Jackson, Wyoming, to visit the National Elk Refuge, which is just off the highway north of Jackson, on the way to the airport, Grand Teton National Park, and Yellowstone. Just past Alpine, the first town after entering Wyoming, we saw mountain goats just uphill from the road, and stopped to snap a few photos.
Once in Jackson, we rode on a horse-drawn wagon (there wasn't enough snow for the sleighs) out into the refuge and watched the elk for a while. It was cold, but we stayed adequately warm due to bundling up and covering our laps with blankets. My feet still got cold. We learned a lot about elk and the refuge.
We went across the street to Dairy Queen for a quick lunch and then climbed into a van for a different tour, around the back side of the refuge, with a Fish & Wildlife Service naturalist as our guide. There we saw many bighorn sheep, close enough to examine with binoculars, but too far to photograph.
In all, a very enjoyable day. We made it back to Roy & Mary's house before the snow storm came.

We went on an elk tour at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge one fall, but didn't see any up close and personal that we could photograph. We did hear a lot of bugling, though. I would say your tour was much more successful.
