Retries

Monday morning we headed back to the beach for more snorkeling. That's the plan for Tuesday, too. We weren't up super early today, but still pulled into the Ko Olina Beach Park on the west side of the island before nine. We got a good parking spot and an equally good blanket spot in the shade of a small hibiscus tree.

The snorkeling there was not as fantastic as Pūpūkea, but it was much easier to get in and out of the water, and there were still lots of things to see, just not as many fish. We saw a couple new types, including flounders and a very long skinny fish that I haven't identified. The lagoon was protected from waves so it was a great place for the younger kids to practice swimming and riding on the boogie boards that came with the apartment. Eric learned to use his flippers to swim faster.

Around noon we headed towards the Hawaii Plantation Village, stopping for shaved ice along the way, which took two tries. The village has replicas of housing of many nationalities that came to Hawaii in significant numbers. There were plants growing among them, some of them labeled, and some apparently chosen to match, like the bilimbi outside the Filipino house. There was also a large taro plantation to walk through.

We got lunch late and hung around the area expecting to meet Nicole's family at a place called Beer Lab. Colin had asked to bring Harry Potter in the car, and we ended up reading under a monkey pod tree in a park while we waited for the four o'clock opening. But when we arrived, we did not find her aunt. They were at a different location, forty minutes away, ironically just across the street from where we got dinner last night.

Tonight we picked up dinner from another place, but a smaller amount so we could also make a dent in the leftovers. While we were cleaning up after dinner, we boiled the breadfruit. I tried some while I was cutting it up for tomorrow. It's pretty good just like that, in my opinion. I'm looking forward to trying it with jellies or other bread toppings, though.

On an island as small as Oahu, it's amazing how often you can end up 40min away from the person you thought you were going to see.

So breadfruit is actually consumed just like bread?

It's much denser than bread, and it was hard to eat a lot of it. The jam went OK with it, but I think savory preparations would also be good.

Interesting. Thanks.
