Canyonlands: Newspaper Rock

On the way in to Canyonlands, we had seen signs for Newspaper Rock, but on the way out we caught a glimpse of the rock itself. We stopped the car, turned around, and went back to see it closer.

The petroglyphs at Newspaper Rock span thousands of years. The one that caught my attention driving by looked like a wagon wheel, but there are much older carvings that resemble a variety of animals, as well as people. The signs ask us not to make further contributions, so it is mostly frozen in time, although there are inscriptions with 20th Century dates.

After, we drove back for dinner at Moab Diner, and returned to the RV park in time for a few minutes of swimming. The pool closes at dusk, officially. Bats flew overhead while we cooled down in the waning daylight.
