Tuesday morning, July 10, we packed up the trailer and moved it to the RV site's parking lot, then drove the thirty miles or so to the Island in the Sky entrance to Canyonlands. Our first stop was the end of the road for a hike to see the Upheaval Dome.
The hike was uphill to the first overlook, and then around the rim of the crater to a second one. The signs at Upheaval Dome call it a mystery. It may have been a salt dome, caused by denser rock on top of salt, but recent evidence suggests a meteor impact. Wikipedia claims shocked quartz found in 2008 strongly supports that conclusion. In any case, it's an interesting geological phenomenon that is completely different from the river-carved features elsewhere in the park.
The hike to the second overlook was marked with cairns for much of the way, because it crossed large rocks. In places, stairs had been carved, in others the rocks were "unimproved".

Cute hiking method. I think Cousin Andrew would approve. He seems to do a lot of jumping lately.
