Sequestered in Seattle, Day 283

Saturday morning we were moving slowly, but we eventually headed out with the Hansens to walk to Top Pot for doughnuts. The weather was cloudy, but it didn't start raining until we got down to Kerry Park to eat the doughnuts. And it stopped soon after we started walking home.

Next, Rachel helped me put together our Christmas sleigh. It's now handsomely displayed in front of the fireplace next to the tree, with a few gifts on board.

In the afternoon we started another Harry Potter puzzle, and I started on the dough for a Christmas Stollen. I'm following a sourdough recipe, which will need to involve three fermentation phases, the first to get a starter with the right hydration, and then tomorrow I'll add that to more flour and milk to form the first half of the final dough.

We also started the gingerbread houses for tomorrow. Nicole was following a tip to let the structure dry overnight before trying to decorate it. We'll find out in the morning if we've used enough icing.

After dinner, Rachel played a few Christmas carols at the piano and some of us sang along. The boys didn't want to participate, but Lydia came over to read the music, at least. Then, soon after the kids went upstairs to play, Colin took a foot to the face and his nose was bleeding. We decided to cancel game night and focus on a calm evening with the kids instead. We divided into two reading camps and read for a few hours.

Today I learned that a polar bear liver has enough vitamin A to provide a single person the recommended daily allowance for more than a hundred years, and enough to kill more than fifty adults. I vaguely remember reading about polar bear livers in some book about the Arctic, so perhaps this was relearning.

Why do polar bear livers store up so much vitamin A?
