Sequestered in Seattle, Day 234: Spooky Saturday

Happy Halloween! I had a laundry list of things to do today. After breakfast, I decided to interleave granola making with the others. I put the seeds and nuts in to toast and then went down to my office to move my heater. It's now on an interior wall with no overhang.

Next I put the new tag on the license plate. I had some old stickers to peel off, first. Then the whole family went for a walk. We decided to go to David Rodgers Park. Along the way we saw Lydia's friend Parker, and invited his family to join us. They eventually met us there. It seemed busy at the park, but was still possible to keep our distance from others, and we only saw one father and son who weren't masked. The restrooms were open so we could wash hands before leaving.

On the way home, Nicole stopped at Ken's, then Rachel asked for lunch from Malena's Tacos. We obliged. I ordered and waited ten minutes or so out front. After lunch, Nicole and I did some yard cleanup. We moved some pots off the deck for the winter and put away the rug. I took out one of the tomatillo plants and harvested its remaining fruit. The leaves had turned yellow. The other, smaller plant is still green, so it gets to stay a bit longer, like the beans.

Nicole made a deal with the neighbor to exchange treats later on, and Rachel went to talk to Talia across the street. Later, she and I cracked the black walnuts we picked up last weekend.

Finally, I spent some time playing Mario with Eric, and Rachel joined us for a bit. Then it was time for dinner. By that time, Nicole had turned off the porch light to discourage visitors, and we had the door between the entry and the kitchen closed.

After dinner, we made caramel popcorn, with me popping and Nicole topping. She and Rachel took some to Holly across the street, and got some candy in return. Then we went downstairs to watch the new Witches on HBO. Based on Roald Dahl, this one has been adapted to take place in Alabama, and features Anne Hathaway as the Grand High Witch. I don't remember clearly how the previous version differs from the book, and I haven't read the book since Rachel was in first grade, but Colin has been reading it in his class, so he might know. The witches were not quite as scary as before, I thought, but I'm not a great judge of that.

The world these days is scarier than the movie, anyway. Here's hoping we get the spread under control, soon.

Maëva has been rereading "Witches" because she wants to watch the new one, too.
