Thursday, July 8th. Another nothing on the calendar day.
At 9, the girls headed to Aix with Marie-Elisabeth and Sophie to see an ancient Egypt exposition at the Musee Granet, a surprise for Maeva's birthday. They have been waiting for a year to do this. Maeva was excited about seeing the mummy. They spent the day in Aix, also having a pizza lunch and doing a little shopping. Maeva brought me back a little hippo figurine from the museum gift store that she purchased with her own money. She got a cat one for Sylvain that reminded her of Tiger. In addition to the expo, she was struck by the number of homeless people in the street. She gave one woman two euros. She had wanted to give five, but her grandmother told her that was too much.
Mid morning, Sylvain went with Alain & Léon (who's currently interning with the City) in their work utility vehicle to pick up the paving stones for the driveway project.
I did the exercise bike, worked on class prep for my detective fiction course using some interesting Sherlock Holmes extracts discovered in my reading to Maeva, and did yoga.
The girls got home about 5:30 and I sent them to bathe. Afterwards, they asked to have family movie time with the Ghostbusters 2016 remake. I quite enjoyed it. It includes cameos from most of the original cast. The girls both claim to like the original better.
The Delta variant is now up to 43% of cases in France, 50% in our department. As a result, the daily new case curve has started trending back up again. It bottomed out at a seven-day moving average around 1,800 at the beginning of last week and is currently back up to 2,700. I was happy to learn today that our friend Alain and his significant other, Evelyne, now have vaccination appointments.

Kudos to Maëva for her compassion and generosity. Has homelessness worsened there because of the pandemic?
I read that Pfizer is working on a 3rd shot (booster) for their vaccine as data indicate that the virus is evolving and the original is becoming less effective. If I read the article right, they've found that a 3rd shot makes the immune response 3-4 times higher than the 2 shot "fully vaccinated" standard. That's a huge increase.
When I was in Aix last Friday, I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. I think Maëva has simply not encountered it much.
The radio here reported this morning that Pfizer is recommending a third booster shot three months after the second dose.
Later, I listened to a USA Today news report that said the Pfizer booster would be 6 months after the second dose.
