We got started a little slowly Saturday morning, but still managed to make the ten o'clock ferry to Bremerton. We forgot the kids' swim bag in the process, but in the end the weather wasn't appropriate for water play.
On arriving across the sound, we first went for a hike at the Illahee Preserve. We walked about three miles through cedar, Douglas-fir, and hemlock forest. The salal berries were ripe, and we had a few. They are tasty, but tricky to pick, because the stems don't separate easily.
Next, we went to Brittany's house. There we hung out in the backyard. We had chicken wings and fried vegetables, then later caramel popcorn. We stayed past the last ferry home, so we had to drive, arriving just after eleven. The weather was a little chilly, and we had some drizzles. It was forecast to warm up to about eighty, but I'm not sure it ever topped seventy where we were.
