String of titles

Monday's forecast was for rain and maybe snow, but it was dry at our house throughout the day. My colleague did report snow in Bellevue, though.

I went for two walks with Rachel. First, in the afternoon, we dropped off some mail and got her a steamer at Ken's. Then, after dinner, which was early, she had completed her reading requirement, so we walked to the bookstore and she got A Sky Beyond the Storm, the fourth book in its series, which she has been impatiently awaiting since it released in paperback two weeks ago.

Rachel had wanted to drive to the bookstore, but I reminded her that we didn't have the car. Nicole took it to the dealership this morning for some repair work, and then unexpectedly returned home an hour or so later via Lyft. At that point she thought it would take about four hours, but when she talked to them later in the morning they estimated end of day Tuesday. Fortunately, we didn't have anywhere urgent to be. I think Rachel may have had to postpone a piano lesson, though.

Nicole and I watched the third episode of Station Eleven. This one followed a different character and took place almost entirely before the onset of the disaster. I think that was more backstory than the book provided, but I'd like to read it again, because I don't really remember.

I finished two books today, one on Kindle and then one on paper. The Round House is a novel about the plight of Native American women and the powerlessness of Native American law enforcement, crossed with the coming of age of a thirteen year old boy. Finding the Mother Tree is a memoir of the research that led to understanding the cooperation within and between tree species via mycorrhizal networks, interwoven with the life led while conducting that science. I thought it was really well constructed, and enjoyed that it described how the studies were carried out, and sometimes what inspired them, not just what we learned from them.
