Last week I was a guest teacher for Ms. Fox's 8th grade Spanish classes at Hamilton MS. She emailed me Tuesday to see if I was available Thursday (tomorrow) and emailed again last night to see if I could also do Friday. I enjoy working at Hamilton, and it has an added bonus shuttling Flavia and Rachel to and from school one less obstacle to juggle. And having Rachel stopped by throughout the day to say hi, introduce her friends, or share her apple slices makes my day feel extra special.
Unlike the 6th grade Science teacher, Ms. Fox has prepared all the materials needed for Thursday and Friday. My very limited Spanish shouldn't be an issue because the students will be reviewing for their exam on Friday. If they start to get restless, I have a couple of filler activities ready to go. Tic-Tac-Toe or make a Limerick using vocabulary words.
I have to get another last minute Science lesson ready to use since I have already used my Physic Girl: Crazy Vortex Pools materials on Tuesday. This is another fun aspect of the job... if the regular classroom teacher hasn't left work for me to use with the students, then I can make up my own lessons. This is so much less rigid than being required to work from a specific curriculum. By the fourth day in the elementary art class, the pre-planned substitute materials ran dry, so I made a lesson using animal silhouettes on a paper that students designed to look like the animal hide/skin/fur.... It was very fun.
