Sunday, January 16th. Happy 31st Birthday to Franck!
This morning, I got my sourdough loaf ready for its second proofing, then enjoyed a few minutes of quiet reading of Dorian Gray over breakfast before the girls came home. Then we did homework. Laureva had a poem to memorize about four stone benches reacting to the seasons. Finally, we finished watching the Klaus 2 movie before lunch.
Maëva's friend Stella's birthday party scheduled for this afternoon was canceled. Stella's mom sent a message that Stella has had a cough and fever since Friday. Her Covid tests have been negative, though.
Sylvain and Maëva went running again this afternoon. Sylvain says that Maëva is quite the little runner. She seems to enjoy pushing herself.
Fred sent me a message to say that she and Vincent got their boosters yesterday. Then last night, they learned that Céleste has Covid. Marius will also have to stay home for seven days as he's an unvaccinated teenager. Capucine, however, as an elementary school student, can go to school as long as her three home tests as D0, 2 and 4 remain negative. That seems like a problem with the protocol to me. Capucine isn't a contact case from a school situation where masks were worn who will be completely separated from the positive case once she has tested to return. She's a contact case from a family member she lives with. It seems to me that it would be better for her to stay home as well, wouldn't it? Fred and Vincent will get official tests tomorrow.
I got sixteen more literature exams graded this afternoon. Only one out of twenty-four has even verged on acceptability so far. Not surprising as only one student out of eighty elected to turn in a practice exercise I offered to correct for them during the semester. She should do well, at least.
I implemented a new N95 mask decontamination technique today: heating for forty-five minutes in the oven at 100C. Much less work than washing, which is apparently not recommended, as they don't get wrinkled and have to be flattened out. The CDC now says N95s can be reused five times, so I'm upping our usages to five, from three.
During the hangout, I marked my decontaminated masks, made a batch of guacamole and cut up fruit to refresh the leftovers of yesterday's fruit salad. It was lovely to see Evan, Roy, Rachel, Mom, Dad and Meredith and to catch up on weather, work, school, crafts, reading, pets, food and Covid news.
