More teeth

Wednesday morning, Nicole returned to the elementary art classroom for a half day. She's headed back once more tomorrow, before switching to middle school Spanish on Friday (not Rachel's class, though). She was planning to see if they could move things around to fit more classes in while she was available, and she sent me a schedule showing she was covering all but two classes.

She left the school in time to pick up Rachel before noon to take her to the orthodontist, so she could get her braces removed for a visit to the dentist. Then the other kids came home and Nicole took them to piano. Lydia did her lesson from home again. I ended up taking Rachel back to the orthodontist by bike. It was my first time on the bike in a while, but it still works. The ground was still a little wet, but it was not raining, and the temperature was pleasant.

Lydia helped Nicole make dinner. Nicole attended the PTA meeting after dinner so I played on the Switch with Eric, and Lydia joined us after a bit.

I finished reading The Journal of John Woolman this evening. It's in the same volume of the Harvard Classics as Ben Franklin's autobiography, and promised to have something to say about abolition, even in the 1750s. I found a lot of the writing inscrutably abstract, talking about going to Friends meetings but giving no details about the contents. However, there was an interesting visit to a native village in Pennsylvania with better detail, and it was somewhat interesting to follow his attempts to do the right thing. He would tell his friends not to write him letters because he thought the people who delivered the post were ill used. He wanted to visit Barbados, to witness the plight of slave labor there, but couldn't bring himself to pay for passage, because it would put money in the hands of slave traders. The final paragraphs are arguing, not for the first time, against the practice of dyeing clothing. He died on a visit to England, evidently of smallpox, having decided against inoculation years earlier as inconsistent with his religious principles.
